If you are Cambodian citizens, you are allowed only for 24 hour visa free transit. In other words, you are allowed to stay in Shanghai only for 24 hours, counting from your scheduled arrival, until your scheduled departure. If your layover is longer just for a minute more than 24 hours, you will have to obtain a Chinese visa in advance. In other case, if you are US citizens, you are allowed to enjoy 144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai twice.

By the way,if you plan to travel on 24 hour visa free transit and your layovers are during the night hours, you are advised to book your accommodation in Shanghai in advance and to bring this confirmation with you. You will approach 24 hour visa free transit counter upon your landing in Shanghai where you will apply for a temporary entry permit. You will also enclose the mentioned accommodation confirmation. Anyway, you should be aware that the issuing a temporary entry permit when flying on 24 hour visa free transit always depends on discretion of immigration authorities on a day of your arrival in Shanghai.
