Andy, the first and the most important detail is that your itinerary is eligible for 24 hours visa free transit and you do not need any kind of visa. Having such a long layover of around 14 hours is fine and acceptable. If you want to exit the airport this is never guaranteed because this is not an inherent passenger right. In any case, your chance to be allowed to exit the airport are very, very good based on your very long layover. So, when you land in China, before the immigration, you will approach 24/240 hour visa free transit counter where you will apply for a temporary entry permit by presenting your flight tickets and your hotel booking confirmation (if you plan to stay at the hotel only) along with a form (arrival card) that you will fill out upon landing. This application is free of any charge. After a short check you will receive a temporary entry permit and after that you will head to the immigration and finally to the city to have your time on your own. I wish you a success in obtaining a permit and you can count on this procedure as a formality because lately the Chinese authorities do not withhold the temporary entry permit for those having layovers longer than 8 hours. Have a nice visit to Shanghai.
