144hour TWOV Asking for my partner

Is this itinerary covered under the 144-hr TWOV policy for Shanghai?
1) USA -> Shanghai on Feb 18 (and land Feb. 20 with layover in Wuhan Feb 19th) RT tickets leaving on Feb 18th and returning Feb 27th.
2) Shanghai --> Nanjing to visit my family for three days
3) Shanghai --> Japan (Feb 23rd)
4) Japan --> Shanghai (Feb 26th)
5) Shanghai --> USA (Feb 27th)

(I have a Chinese Visa so shouldn't matter, but my partner doesn't). Will going from Shanghai to Nanjing to see my relatives during those three days require him to have a Visa, or is this covered under the 144 hr policy?
