About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I am a US citizen flying from Seoul to Shanghai. I will be in Shanghai 72 hours.

It looks like I qualify for the 72 hours free transit visa. Is there anything I can do prior to going to the airport to make sure it goes smoothly - forms to fill out, calling the airline, etc?

It is a complete waste of time to call the airline. You should print out your confirmed air tickets, and it can also be useful to have a printed copy of your accommodation details (including telephone number). It will help to use the correct terminology: you are not getting a "free transit visa" (which doesn't even exist). You are in "144 hours transit without visa" or "144 hours visa-free transit", and there is no visa involved at all. Using these phrases will help prevent any confusion or misunderstanding when you check-in.
