About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Airline employee with confirmed onward ticket

Hi,

I am an airline employee and plan to enter Shanghai on a standby ticket, but will purchase a confirmed ticket from Shanghai to Seoul, Korea. I would like to stay in Shanghai at least 72/144 hours depending on transit without visa rules. Will I qualify if my itinerary is as follows:
Standby ticket - Seattle to Shanghai
Confirmed ticket - Shanghai to Seoul

Thank you!

Unfortunately, this is not allowed. You need a confirmed ticket for your arrival from Seattle to Shanghai too. You should definitely obtain a Chinese visa in advance especially if you intend to visit this country during the next 10 years. I say this with purpose because US citizens are eligible for 10 year, long term, multiple entry Chinese tourist (L) visa that is in reality a good investment.
