About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Canadian on X2 Visa

I've been in China since September on an X2 visa. Before I return to Canada I plan on flying to Japan. My returning itinerary would be Tokyo -> Shanghai -> Toronto, while stopping in Shanghai for less than 24 hours. Is this allowed? And would I be able to exit the airport during my layover in Shanghai?

Thank you

Yes, you are perfectly allowed to travel on the mentioned itinerary relying on 24 hour visa free transit. Anyway, having in mind that you plan to exit the airport, I would advise you to make your layover just a bit longer than 24 hours to be eligible for 144 hour visa free transit. The reason is very simple... If you travel on 24 hour visa free transit you may be or may not be allowed to exit the airport, but if you travel on 144 hour visa free transit, you will be definitely allowed to exit the airport. Please, have this detail in mind for your future travel.
