About:China Visa on Arrival

Xiamen Air Connection

I'm flying return trip from LAX to Bali via Xiamen. My connecting time qualifies me for a complimentary hotel stay in both directions. This obviously will require a visa of some sort. My question is: If I decide to extend my stay in Xiamen on my return connection from Bali by 3 days and I pay for my hotel and pay any fare difference to Xiamen Air for changing my ticket, can I get a VOA for the required days?

William, if your itinerary looks exactly like this:

Los Angeles - Xiamen - Bali (Denpasar)
Bali (Denpasar) - Xiamen - Los Angeles

You are perfectly eligible for visa free transit option and you don't need any kind of visa. Also, it is obvious that your itinerary is bought via XiamenAir and your flights are: MF830 and MF891.

Now, I assume from your initial post that you intend just to be in a short transit during your first stop in Xiamen and after that, you would like to stay in Xiamen for 3 days. This is all fine. I will explain...

During your first stop, you will be eligible for 24 hour visa free transit because your entire stay in Xiamen (from 5:10am to 5:50pm) will be less than 24 hours. If XiamenAir policy is to offer you a complimentary hotel accommodation, you will print out the confirmation about this detail. Upon your arrival in Xiamen, you will approach 24 hour visa free transit counter where you will apply for a temporary entry permit by presenting the confirmation of your accommodation. After that, you will be granted a permit (this is all free of charge) and you will exit the airport to stay in the hotel or to explore the city for a short time.

During your second stop, if you extend your time for Xiamen to 3 or more days, you will be eligible for 144 hour visa free transit. To do this, you will have to agree with the airline before your departure from Bali (Denpasar), so that you have new itinerary at check-in in Bali where you will declare that you will travel to Los Angeles via Xiamen using 144 hour visa free transit. You will be allowed boarding. Upon your landing, you will approach 144 hour visa free transit where you will get a sticker allowing you to stay in Xiamen visa free for the time you will choose (3 days or more, you will decide).

Basically, this is it in short.

Just to add, that visa free transit is in no way related to VOA. This is completely visa free travel. Relying on Xiamen VOA can only bring problems. This VOA option is just a relic of the past and is being slowly phased out in favor of visa free transit options. So, just forget about VOA because you have much better options that are increasingly promoted by Chinese authorities.

Thank you so very much for this perfect response. Your assumptions about my flights are correct and the information you provided is above and beyond my expectations. I feel much more comfortable and better prepared knowing the arrival process in Xiamen. You provide a very valuable service by providing clarification for what can be a very complex and often frustrating process. Thank You!
