Hello Good Evening,

I am a permanent residence of Canada, Jamaican background holding a Canadian Travel Document. I will be travelling to Bangkok on February 3rd with a lay over in Shanghai, Pu Dong for 2 hours going and coming from Bangkok to Toronto a lay over in Shanghai for 11 hours. I will be applying for the Thailand visa in January closer to the date. . I would like to leave the airport when I am coming back on February 16th since I have 11 hours layover. Please kindly confirm if I require a "Shanghai visa"?

Thanks in advance,
Raya

Raya, both of your itineraries will be eligible for 24 hour visa free transit and you don't need any kind of visa.

Anyway, to be allowed to exit the airport, you will have to approach 24 hour visa free transit counter upon your landing in Shanghai where you will apply for a temporary entry permit. You may or may not be granted a temporary entry permit because the issuing of one depends entirely on immigration authorities discretion.

Also, please have in mind to use only 24 hour visa free transit phrase and not Shanghai visa or similar. Yes, you will apply for a temporary entry permit in Shanghai when you arrive in Shanghai, but this is not a visa, but a permit issued free of charge.

One more detail. You have mentioned that you have 2 hours of layover during your first stop in Shanghai and I hope that you are traveling on a single (through) ticket because otherwise it would be very hard to perform all the formalities within such a short layover time because Shanghai airport is quite time consuming.
