Your itinerary is definitely eligible for 24 hour visa free transit and you don't need any kind of visa.

You will print out your flight tickets and you will also declare at check-in in Los Angeles that you will travel to Bangkok via Shanghai using 24 hour visa free transit. After short inspection, you will be allowed to board the plane and start your journey to Bangkok.

Upon arrival in Shanghai, you will accomplish several formalities, really nothing special, and you will wait for your next flight within the transit zone of the airport.
