About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Police station registration

First, I want to make sure my trip San Francisco - Beijing (4 days) - Mumbai (15 days) - Beijing - San Francisco qualifies for the 144 hour Visa free transit.

Secondly, I will not stay in a hotel. Instead, I will stay at my relative's or my friend's place. Is there any particular requirement on which police station I should go? Or can I go any police station in Beijing? Does my relative or my friend need to go with me?

Thanks!

First of all, your itinerary, if you have mentioned your all stops, is perfectly eligible for visa free transit in Beijing twice. During your first stop you will be eligible for 144 hour visa free transit and during your second stop, you will be eligible for 24 or 144 hour visa free transit in relation to the length of your stay in Beijing.

You are fine to stay in the accommodation provided by your friend or relative, but you have to register yourself at the police (PSB) station within 24 hours from your arrival that has a territorial jurisdiction over the area where you will stay in Beijing. It is practically essential that your friend/relative arrives with you at the station because of the language barrier and the process of the registration itself. Also, keep in mind that you will have to fill out the form where you will have to insert the identity, address and a phone number of your relative/friend, so have those details with you, ready to introduce them on the form that you will fill out.

Thank you very much for the prompt reply!

I have couple more questions.
1. Could you give me a list of PSB that has a territorial jurisdiction?

2. Do they work over the weekend? I’ll arrive Saturday evening.

3. Do I need to know the relative’saddress and ID number when I arrive the airport?

Thank you!

1) Your relatives or friends should know which PSB is responsible for their neighborhood. They will also have to go with you as your inviting party so the police can record it in their system. Even if they do not know where it is, you still have 24 hours after arrival to figure it out.
2) They work 24/7/365.
3) Name, address and cell number should suffice.

My friend lives in Beijing but her address on ID is not where she lives ( another city). She also doesn’t have Beijing Hukou. Can she be my inviting party? How to prove the address is where I will live? Thanks!

It is perfectly normal for a person's ID card address not to match their current address as ID cards are only issued at her hukou's PSB and not anywhere else (and for ordinary Chinese, moving hukou around is a nightmarish situation that few qualify anyway). However by municipal law your friend should already have a Beijing residence permit or a resident registration certificate (either a green card or a blue card) issued by the PSB responsible for their neighborhood since 2017 or so.

Anyway, as a non-Chinese national, immigration is not expecting you know all these stuff. Your friend's name, address and phone number will suffice and they will call if they have any questions.
