About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Flying from Mexico to Thailand through Canton

Am I elegible to get the 72-hour visa-free transit policy if I fly from Vancouver (CA) and arrive at Canton (Baiyun Airport) at 5:10pm and leave to Thailand at 8:00pm (my final destination)? I have a Mexican passport. Also, I would like to understand how will it work on my way back? I'm flying from Thailand to Canton (Baiyun Airport) arriving at 10:45pm and leaving from there to Mexico at 1:20 pm the next day (almost 15 hours layover), do I also need to get a visa on my way back so I can book a hotel in Canton to have some rest overnight? Thank you

You will be definitely eligible for 24 hour visa free transit because your stay, both ways, will be less than 24 hours. Assuming that you are flying on a single (through) ticket booked through China Southern, you will stay, again both ways, within the transit area of Guangzhou airport. Since recently, Guangzhou airport has decided that it will not allow to passengers in 24 hour visa free transit, flying on international to international connections, to apply for a temporary entry permit and to exit the airport.

It is a bit unfortunate situation because Mexican citizens are eligible for 144 hour visa free transit, but only when a layover is longer than 24 hours. If you only were able to rearrange your tickets, it would be more comfortable for your entire travel, especially for your return flight.
