About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

SFO -> HND -> PVG -> EWR ... Transit through Country A to China then on to Country C

I am a USA citizen. I will travel from USA (San Francisco) via Japan (Tokyo) to Shanghai (same itinerary, different airlines), with a 4 hour stopover in Tokyo HND airport. I will depart Shanghai 60 hours later direct back to USA (Newark). Does this itinerary apply for visa free transit?

Yes, your itinerary is definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai. Please, just take care that your flight back to US does not have any additional landing within mainland China and in Japan!
