About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

round trip vs multi city?

I'm a US citizen living in Okinawa. Can I purchase a round trip ticket from OKA to Shanghai staying only 48 hours or would I have to purchase a ticket from Okinawa to Shanghai then Shanghai to Taipei?

Thank you! Also, since I would be flying to Taipei, could I fly into shanghai then depart from Beijing to Taipei?

You should definitely book the second mentioned itinerary! There has to be a third country. In other words:

Okinawa - Shanghai - Taipei

Is definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit

Your first option would require a Chinese tourist (L) visa obtained in advance.

You mean:

Okinawa - Shanghai - Beijing - Taipei

If I'm right that you are asking about the above mentioned itinerary, then the answer is, unfortunately this is not eligible for 144 hour visa free transit. Under 144 hour visa free transit it is not allowed to travel through two Chinese transit areas (in this case Shanghai and Beijing) in a row and to remain eligible for 144 hour visa free transit.

By the way, this itinerary would be possible only under 24 hour visa free transit option, but what would you do with just 24 hours in two large Chinese cities?
