The simplest answer is yes, you have to obtain a Chinese tourist (L) visa in advance and you are allowed to travel to every part of China (with the exception of Tibet that requires an additional permit) in the way you prefer. Anyway, there are some additional options that you could use:
- 5 day Shenzhen visa on arrival - This is a visa that you can obtain on the border between Hong Kong and mainland China and it allows you to travel to Shenzhen city area only for a duration of 5 days (in reality the day of arrival + 5 days)
- 144 hour visa free transit for Guangdong province. You have to take a direct flight from Hong Kong to Guangzhou and after your arrival you will have 6 days (in reality the day of arrival + 6 days) for your exploration of the entire Guangdong province. Anyway, after this period, you will have to return to Macau by ferry from Shenzhen. You will also have to book this ferry tickets in advance, before your departure from Hong Kong. Beside Guangdong province that is immediately behind Hong Kong, you can use this option to visit, for example Shanghai or Beijing area, but always by taking a plane to mainland China and back by plane to Macau.
- 6-Day Visa Exemption for Tourists to Pearl River Delta. This is the option where you can join a tour to the most interesting parts of Guangdong province by an authorized, Hong Kong based tourist agency. You can, of course, create a tour according to your wishes and the agency can perform exactly such a tour, visa free. Of course, this requires that you start a conversation with several Hong Kong based agencies and see which one will offer you the best conditions.
As far as Hong Kong is concerned, you can travel and stay in Hong Kong visa free and you can also apply for a Chinese tourist visa in Hong Kong too.
Now, when you know your options, you will make a choice.
