Applying for a visa with uk passport in another country

I am hoping to visit my son and his family in China but need to know if I can obtain a visa from the embassy in Madrid in Spain as I now spend most of the year over here instead of going back to uk.

I can only get a visa if I have Spanish residency so I have to go back to U.K. to get one
