Part one:

Of course, you have contacted China Southern customer support and you have received an answer that you need a visa. Trust us here, you will always get such an answer from a customer support that knows just a few basic details about the subject called, Chinese visa free transit policy. Customer services and embassies/consulates too are useless addresses to ask your question. The only relevant and official source where you can find real and reliable information is Timatic, a source used by airport ground staff that deals with visas, transits and similar staff. So, this website is based on Tiamtic, practically in its entirety with additional details that are a product of monitoring the practice of Chinese immigration and similar.

Now to answer your question... Your itinerary:

London - Wuhan - Guangzhou - New Zealand

If the entire transit time from your first scheduled arrival in China, in your case in Wuhan, until your last scheduled departure from China, in your case from Guangzhou is less than 24 hours, you are eligible for 24 hour visa free transit.

Part two:

You just need to print out your tickets, have those printouts with you and you will declare in London, at check-in counter, that you will fly to New Zealand via China using 24 hour visa free transit. After a short inspection, you will receive your boarding passes and you will be allowed to board the plane. Upon your arrival in Wuhan, you will approach 24 hour visa free transit, present your tickets and your passports and there you will be granted a temporary entry permit that will allow you to travel through China on domestic flight.

Basically this is it, there are no visas, there are no charges or anything else... Just 24 hour visa free transit and you will see that system functions well. Of course, unless you trust customer service that knows nothing beside their strictly defined field of duty.

Don't worry, you are perfectly eligible for 24 hour visa free transit and you will use it in the same way as tens of thousands have done it before and will do after you on the very same itinerary.
