About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Flight from North America back via Japan

My flight arrives from USA to Beijing at 2:40pm on Saturday and my outbound flight departs at 8:30am on Wednesday to Japan and then onward to the USA. I presume based on the calculation this qualifies for the 72hr visa but also the 144hr if need be? Also i presume i can just apply for the transit visa when i land at Beijing and don't need to go through the airline?

Your itinerary is definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in Beijing area. 72 hour visa free transit has been replaced in Beijing by 144 hour visa free transit a couple of years ago. You will print out your flight tickets and also declare in US at check-in that you will travel to Japan via Beijing using 144 hour visa free transit. Upon your landing in Beijing, you will approach 144 hour visa free transit counter where you will get a sticker and be allowed to exit the airport. In reality, quite easy with this logical itinerary.
