About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Technical stop and layover in China

We are travelling from Hungary to NZ via China. There will be a technical stop for 2 hrs in Urumqi and almost 10 hrs in Guangzhou. If I understand well, we do not need visa for these stops and in Guangzhou we can also exit the airport.

Do you recommend to exit to the city if we have only 9 hrs 40 stop there? Shall I fill an arrival/departure card? Is there a chance not to claim the luggage and go through custom just have my hand luggage and go for a short sightseeing?

Dear Zupan.

We will go on 20 Feb and come back by the same route on 9th March. Can you please tell me what shoudl I do if we travel these dates? Shall we apply for a Chineese visa because of the stopover?

Kind regards,

Lilla, you will definitely fly by China Southern CZ6022 from Vienna to Urumqi to Guangzhou. Listen, at the time being, until some date in November, this flight is confirmed eligible for 24 hour visa free transit because it has 2 hour layover in Urumqi, but the problem is if your departure will be beyond the mentioned date because China Southern will extend its layover in Urumqi from actual 2 hours to 2 hours and 10 minutes and this makes this flight ineligible for any kind of visa free transit scheme.

OK, I will assume that you will use this flight before that date...

You will cross immigration and fill your arrival/departure card in Urumqi (OK, you will probably fill out this card during your flight from Vienna to Urumqi). There you will also receive a temporary entry permit because after Urumqi you will continue your travel as a domestic passenger.

Your checked luggage will be tagged all the way to your final destination (New Zealand), but you will know this detail for certain at the time of your check-in in Vienna. Upon arrival in Guangzhou, you will arrive there as a domestic passenger, you will take your hand luggage with you and your checked luggage will remain at the custody of Guangzhou airport. In my opinion, it is more than logical that you will use your time to make stroll in the city because you can do it very cheaply by using a metro.

Upon your return to Guangzhou airport, you will cross the security and the immigration and will continue your travel toward New Zealand.
