About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Cruise ship passengers

We are U.S. citizens taking a cruise to Japan that leaves from and returns to Shanghai. We are flying in to PVG the morning of the cruise and departing via the same airport the afternoon the cruise ship docks. Would we qualify for the 24-hr visa-free transit? What documents would we need, if any, in addition to our passports?

Yes, you will be able to use 24 hour visa free transit in Shanghai twice, but before that just check your itineraries to see if they fulfill the following conditions:

- Your flight from US to Shanghai should not have any additional landing within mainland China and in Japan
- Your cruise is not allowed to have its first port of call, immediately after Shanghai, in mainland China port
- Your cruise is not allowed to have its last port of call, immediately before Shanghai, in mainland China port
- Your flight from Shanghai to US should not have any additional landing within mainland China and in Japan

If the above mentioned conditions are fulfilled, then you are eligible for 24 hour visa free transit in Shanghai twice. OK, if your transit time during your second stop in Shanghai is longer than 24 hours, you will be eligible for 144 hour visa free transit. In reality, this does not change anything in your case and in your visa free scheme.

You will print out your flight and cruise tickets and have those printouts with you. In US, at check-in, you will declare that you will travel to Japan via Shanghai using 24 hour visa free transit. Upon your landing in Shanghai, you will approach 24 hour visa free transit, present your tickets and shortly after that, you will be allowed to exit the airport. That's it.
