About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Cruise to Japan from Shanghai

Hi everyone. I've been researching what type of visa I may need for a cruise I am taking from Shanghai to Japan but have received many different answers. I will be leaving from the US to Shanghai and arriving the same day the cruise leaves on November 24th and arriving back to Shanghai on December 1st. Our flight back home to the US is December 1st. Do we need to get a multiple entry visa? or can the port give us a 24-hour visa to get back to the airport? Not sure where we can get the 24-hour visas just for transportation between the airport and the port. Thank you!

Thank you for taking the time to clarify this! If my flight from Shanghai has a layover in Hong Kong (which to my knowledge is not mainland China), will I still be able to obtain the 24 hour transit visa? if all other requirements you stated are fulfilled.

Part one:

Judy, you will be eligible for 24 hour visa free transit in Shanghai twice under the assumption that you have presented your itinerary and your dates exactly. Anyway, to be certain, here is a couple of conditions that your itinerary has to fulfill:

- Your flight from US to Shanghai is not allowed to have any additional landing within mainland China and in Japan
- Your cruise is not allowed to have its first port of call, immediately after Shanghai, in mainland China port
- Your cruise is not allowed to have its last port of call, immediately before Shanghai, in mainland China port
- Your flight from Shanghai to US is not allowed to have any additional landing within mainland China and in Japan

If the above conditions are fulfilled, you will be eligible for 24 hour visa free transit in Shanghai twice.

You will apply for your first temporary entry permit upon your landing in Shanghai at the 24 hour visa free counter. You will present your cruise ticket and after a short inspection, you will be allowed to exit the airport and to perform your transfer to the cruise terminal.

Part two:

You will apply for your second temporary entry permit upon your arrival from a cruise, at the cruise terminal where you will present your onward flight ticket for US. Again, after very short inspection, you will be allowed to exit the terminal and proceed toward the airport.

To conclude, this is not complicated at all and I just want to instruct you to use correct terminology. It is 24 hour visa free transit and not a transit visa or similar. There is no any kind of visa at all. You don't need it and you will also not receive one. You will just receive, free of charge, a temporary entry permit that goes along with 24 hour visa free transit. This is just a confirmation from the Chinese authorities that you are allowed to enjoy 24 hours freedom of movement within the defined area to accomplish your transit procedures. Of course, if you have some spare time, you can also make a short stroll in the city.
