Narelle, you are eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai area in principle. Anyway, to be certain about your eligibility, your itinerary has to fulfill the following conditions:
- Your cruise is not allowed to have its last port of call, immediately before Shanghai, in mainland China
- Your flight out of Shanghai is not allowed to have any additional landing of any kind within mainland China and in the country where your cruise will have its last port of call, immediately before Shanghai
If the above mentioned conditions are fulfilled, you are definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai area. Please, use correct terminology because this is not "free visa", but 144 hour visa free transit. There is no visa of any kind at all.
