Shanghai and Guangzhou, do I need two separate invitation letters or two visas?

I'm planning on going to Shanghai and then Guangzhou in one trip to visit two friends

Esther, you need only one invitation letter and one visa. You can claim in the application form that you stay in one city but with a longer stay duration than you need. So that only an invitation letter is required. After you get the visa, it's ok to change your itinerary.
