About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Entering China by plane and leaving by ferry or on foot.

Hi There.

I am Greek living in Greece and holding a valid Greek passport.

I intend to fly from Bangkok to CANton airport and exit China to Macau either by ferry from Shenzhen or on foot from Zhuhai. Am I elligible for the 144hrs visa-free transit at CAN airport?

When I say on foot from Zhuhai to Macau I mean Gongbei border crossing. I've done it 10 years ago but with a normal visa.

Now,can I cross that border instead of using the ferry ticket, from Shekou to Macau,which I clearly understand that I must issue in advance and have it in order to board the flight from BKK and show at the immigration officer at CAN airport in order to get the 144 hrs visa free transit.

On the other hand in case that I have to use that ferry ticket is there another scheme of a one day (or so) free pass for visiting Zhuhai from Macau and back? I think there was such a permit a few years back.

Yes, you can use 144 hour visa free transit in Guangdong province because you will arrive in Guangzhou by air. Anyway, to be eligible in your case, you will have to do the following:

- After your stay in Guangzhou, you will take a train or bus to Shenzhen
- You will take a ferry (a catamaran in reality) from Shenzhen Shekou port to Macau because you cannot travel on foot within 144 hour visa free transit

To be eligible for 144 hour visa free transit, you will have to book your ferry tickets through TurboJet ferry website, online in advance. You will receive an e-confirmation that you will print out and bring that printout with you as a proof of 144 hour visa free transit. Please, have in mind that you have to use exactly that ferry that you have bought your tickets for.

Dimitrios, you cannot change your travel options when you are on 144 hour visa free transit. In other words, if you have stated that you will take a ferry from Shenzhen Shekou port to Macau, you cannot change your plans and cross over Gongbei border crossing. I perfectly understand that something like that would be more convenient in your case, but this is simple not allowed and if you try do do something like this, you will be fined and even banned for several years from entering China.

So, you will have to book the mentioned ferry ticket because it is actually the only possible option to enter Macau from Guangdong province on 144 hour visa free transit. After that you can travel to Zhuhai by using 3 day Zhuhai VOA that you can obtain on Gongbei border crossing. It is 168 CNY for Greek citizens.

Anyway, you have one other option... You can visit Zhuhai from Guangzhou, do everything you were supposed to do and take a ferry from Jiuzhou port to Shenzhen Shekou port from where you will take a ferry to Macau. This would release you from the necessity to obtain a Zhuhai VOA. Also, the price for this ferry (Jiuzhou to Shekou) is 120 CNY and that is cheaper than Zhuhai VOA. Think about this option.
