About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

On a cruise ship with a stop in Shangai on November 30 arriving at 6 AM and departing at 8 PM.

We are 6 canadian citizens travelling together . We have booked a shore excursion with the ship to visit Shangai area only. That is our only stop in China. When we leave at 8PM, we are heading for Taiwan and then Hong-Kong (where a visa is not required). Are we eligible for a visa free transit?

Hi Louise, will you be on the Millenium? We are Australian and Danish and are trying to find out the same re visas. It looks like the 24hr visa will work for us too. Enjoy your cruise - we may meet, who knows! Cheers Gail

Louise, you are all eligible for 24 hour visa free transit in Shanghai area in case if your last port of call, immediately before Shanghai, is in a country that is different than both mainland China and Taiwan.

In other words, if your itinerary is something like this:

Japan - Shanghai - Taiwan
South Korea - Shanghai - Taiwan
Hong Kong - Shanghai - Taiwan

Then you are definitely eligible for 24 hour visa free transit, but if your itinerary is something like this:

Xiamen - Shanghai - Taiwan
Tianjin - Shanghai - Taiwan
Taiwan - Shanghai - Taiwan

Then you need a Chinese visa obtained in advance.

Gail, if your itinerary is among eligible ones, mentioned above, you don't need any kind of visa because you will be covered by 24 hour visa free transit.
