You can, but only if you have the confirmed Chinese train ticket in your hand when you check-in at your UK airport. Also, you cannot take the high speed rail. Note that if you are returning to Guangzhou after visiting Hong Kong, you must travel by air and not by rail unless you have a visa.

Thanks for this. I also would like to use the 144 hour transit and leave via Hong Kong. If you cannot use the high-speed rail, what ticket is valid and how can I get one?

Yes, you can leave mainland China via Hong Kong using a train. The only eligible train for that purpose is Guangzhou–Kowloon through train that departs from Guangzhou East railway station and arrives at Hong Kong Hung Hom railway station.

You can book your ticket right here, on this website. Just look at the upper part of the website and click on the "Trains" link. Anyway, you should know the following:

- You will have to book this train at least 7 days before your intended train departure because at the time of booking, you will receive an e-confirmation with your name, but the real ticket will be sent to the accommodation of your choice and to be certain that it will arrive on time, they require a booking of 7 days in advance. Keep in mind not to book this ticket on the official website of the train because they are offering an e-confirmation without a name
- To be allowed to book this train, you will have to make your accommodation booking too to be allowed to receive your real paper ticket.
- After you have received your e-confirmation, you will print it out and bring this printout with you as a proof of your transit to Hong Kong.
- Please, have in mind that you have to take exactly that train you have bought your ticket for.

That's it.
