LAX to PVG 12hr layover PVG to BKK

Do I need a visa to be able to explore downtown shanghai during the 12hr layover?

You are eligible for 24 hour visa free transit. But if you want to leave the airport and go to the downtown, you need to apply for a stay permit in the airport.
