By the way, beside your passport, you should print out your e-ticket from Shanghai to Canada and have that printout with you. During your stay in your last port before Shanghai, I assume that it will be in South Korea, you will be asked to provide a proof that you will be really in transit through China and you will present them exactly the ticket from Shanghai to Canada. After that, you will be allowed to continue with your cruise.
Upon arrival in Shanghai, you will apply for a temporary entry permit in the cruise terminal and you will again present your onward ticket. After a short inspection, you will be allowed to exit the terminal and to spend your time in Shanghai until your departure from Shanghai to Canada. That's it.
