If your itinerary is exactly as you have mentioned and you don't have any additional landings, you are definitely eligible for 24 hour visa free transit and you don't need any kind of visa. You should print out your flight tickets and have that printouts with you. Also, you will declare at check-in in London that you will travel to Bangkok via Shanghai using 24 hour visa free transit. Please, have in mind that Croatian citizens need a visa for Thailand, so you will have that visa already in your passport.
Upon your landing in Shanghai, you can stay at the airport waiting for a connecting flight to Bangkok or you can apply for a temporary entry permit to be allowed to exit the airport and to explore a city for several hours. In case if your layover is during the night hours, you will book your accommodation in Shanghai in advance and have a printout of your booking confirmation that you will enclose with your application for a temporary entry permit. This permit is free of charge. Anyway, you should have in mind that the issuing of entry permit is always upon discretion of immigration authorities.
Once again, you should not use a word visa, because you will fly totally visa free. Also, a temporary entry permit is not a visa too.
