About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

72 hour or 144 hour visa

I have purchased 2 round trip tickets ( because it was cheaper to do it this way.) So I have effectively 2 itineraries, but want to make sure that I can still use a 72 or 144 hour transit visa
The first part of the RT ticket is LAX- PEK, and tand then back three days later to Beijing, hen we leave to Seoul, South Korea 3 days later back to Beijing abd then 24 hours later back to LAX.
So effectively I am transiting through Beijing to South Korea, but on two different itineraries. Will that make any difference.?
If I am a bit shy over the 72 hours from landing in Beijing, do I apply for the 144 hour visa.
Is there anything I need to do to get these transit visas BEFORE I leave to China, or is it done all once landed?

You are not getting any kind of visa at any stage. Your route is compliant for 24 or 144 hours transit without visa as long as your nationality qualifies. You will be given 24 or 144 hours based on your flight times, and you don’t get a choice.

Doesn't he need a boarding pass or proof of ongoing destination? He won't have a boarding pass and confirmed seat on his PEK-ICN route when he's trying to leave the airport.

You don't need a boarding pass. You need a confirmed onward ticket. "Confirmed seat" just means you can't fly standby.
