I'm a Canadian citizen. I'm flying from India to Guangzhou to Malaysia. With 3 days in Guangzhou, and then to Malaysia. I'm having a hard time booking it as a connecting flight and can only book the flights as one way tickets. ie. India to China and then within 3 days I have another ticket to Malaysia. will that work?

Traveling on separate tickets is perfectly fine. Also, your itinerary is definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in Guangdong province. Please, just keep in mind that 72 hour TWOV was replaced by 144 hour TWOV in the May of this year.
