Planning to fly to Shanghai from Washington DC & return via Tokyo with a change of lights in Tokyo

Do I qualify for the 144 hour twov if I
1. fly from Washington DC to Shanghai
2. then go by land to Hangzhou
3. return by land to Shanghai
4. leave from Shanghai on a flight to Tokyo and then board a different flight from Tokyo to Washington DC?

Your itinerary is definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai area. Also, your travel overland from Shanghai to Hangzhou and back is also perfectly allowed.
