Can I use the 72 hour visa free transit

Hi,
I have booked a flight that arrives in Changsha Airport from London at 16:05, October 1st. I am then booked on a departing flight at 13:45 the next day (October 2nd). This flight is to Melbourne but involves a stop in Haikou from 15:50 to 18:55, then arriving in Melbourne at 06:20 on October 3rd.

The total transit time is 24 hours and 45 minutes which I presume disqualifies me from the 24 hours visa free travel. Would I be eligible for the 72 hour visa free stay in Changsha or is this also invalid since my onward flight is via another Chinese airport? My guess is if that is the case I would then need a G transit visa which I would obviously prefer to avoid needing.

Thank you!

You understand correctly. You need a visa or different flights.
