About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Chicago to Thailand and Back

I am from Chicago, looking to travel to Krabi, Thailand. I can get there without crossing through China but my confusion is on the return flight. One budget-friendly flight option I saw would leave Krabi, Thailand and fly to Hefei, China for a 23 hours layover. I would then travel from Hefei to Shanghai for another 23 hour layover before returning back to Chicago. I don't mind the long layover because I like to explore new places but I am wondering if I would be able to do this route under the visa-free transit in China. Would I be able to do the 24hour one for each new city or the 72hr option? Any insight would be appreciated.

You will need to apply for the Tourist (L) Visa from the local consulate before departing since you have 2 stops over 24 hours total. Its $140 and valid for 10 years on US Passport. Since you live in Chicago you can apply in person at Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Chicago and not have to rely on visa service (which charges extra fee) to mail in to another state.
