My Chinese z-visa expired in September 2019. I have been home in Chicago since August 2019. I would now like to return to China. Can I renew a z-visa at the Chinese consulate office here in Chicago? In addition, I was told by a friend that China would also require me to supply a new police report. Is that true?

You need to get a new Z visa if you want to continue to work in China. And you need to get a new police report in order to apply for the Z visa.
