About:China Visa on Arrival

Do I need a visa when transiting in Guangzhou?

Hi, I hold Australian passport and looking to travel to Sanya for a week and intend to apply for a visa on arrival. Do I also need a transit visa in advance if I am transiting for about 2 hours at Guangzhou on my way (returning) to Sanya? Thanks.

Yes, you need a Chinese tourist (L) visa because it is not allowed, under visa free transit scheme, to travel to/from Hainan through mainland China and to apply/use any specific VOA or visa free access.

Why a tourist (L) visa? Simply because you will have to apply for a visa anyway, so it is much better to apply for a tourist (L) visa that will perfectly cover your entire itinerary, both Hainan and your journey back via Guangzhou.
