About:Visa on Arrival

I would like to come in Shenzhen to attend some sport event.

My passport is subject to Visa on Arrival (European Union), but my question is if it's possible to come and leave SZ from/to the same destination (flying from and back to Philippines).
I checked and on other Chinese cities it's mentioned that you can't fly from and back to the same city, so, would like to know if this is valid for SZ also.
Otherwise, I would have to fly Philippines - SZ and then SZ - other country - Philippines.
Mentioning that I haven't been to China before.

Thank you,

Hi Zupan,

Thank you so much for the reply. Actually the plan is to stay in Shenzhen for 3 days, so, VOA, suits my case.
Will look to book that ferry ticket in any case, to have the back up🙂.

Thank you,
Leo

Leo, you can travel from the Philippines to SZ, obtain a SZn VOA and return to the Philippines. This is perfectly allowed because this is a visa. A real visa and not a visa free transit. In case of visa free transit, you are not allowed to return directly to the country of origin, but you have to proceed to the third country. This is easy part, but you should know that many airports are reluctant to allow you to board the plane by knowing that you will obtain your visa on arrival. Why? Because a visa by definition is not something that is granted, so in case that you are rejected a visa in SZ, an airline would have to pay a hefty sum for bringing you to a foreign country. For that reason, I will suggest you a very easy solution how to accomplish that uncertainty. Here we go and I will just c/p this solution that functions very well:

Part one:

You can get a VOA at arrival, but you can also make a back-up plan that will allow you to travel completely with a peace of mind.

Knowing that you intend to stay in SZ for more than 24 hours, I suggest you to book a ferry on Chu Kong Passenger Transport company website that runs between Shekou terminal to Hong Kong Macau ferry terminal in Hong Kong. This ticket has to be at least 24 hours + 1 minute after your scheduled arrival by plane in SZ to be eligible for 144 hour visa free transit.

In reality, you will declare at the Philippines check-in that you intend to apply for a VOA upon your landing in SZ. In case that the airport staff allows you to board the plane, you will apply for a VOA upon your landing and then you are allowed to enjoy your time there until your return flight back to the Philippines. Also when you receive your VOA, you will cancel your ferry ticket online and receive a refund minus certain amount of imposed service charge.

Part two:

In case that the airport staff decide not to allow you to board the plane, you will use your second option and present them your ferry e-confirmation and will declare that you have changed your mind and that you will travel on 144 hour TWOV to Hong Kong via SZ. Please, have in mind that when you declare that you will travel on 144 TWOV, you are not allowed to change your mind upon your landing in SZ because your statement made in New Zealand will appear at the screens of Chinese immigration because China is an API country.

So, if you are forced to use this back-up option, you will travel on 144 hour TWOV, you will take a ferry from SZ to Hong Kong and you can immediately return to SZ using Lo Wu / Luohu border crossing where you will obtain a VOA. You will continue your stay in SZ until your departure back to the Philippines.

I'm not telling you this to bother you or to complicate your travel, but just to assure you with this back-up option, so that you really can travel with the peace of mind.

Yes, book a ferry as a back-up solution. Please, just have in mind that the ferry departure time from Shenzhen to Hong Kong has to be at least 24 hours and 1 minute after your scheduled arrival in Shenzhen, i.e. to make you eligible for 144 hour visa free transit.

I would appreciate your feedback because like this I would be able to evaluate the behavior of Philippine airport authorities when told that you plan to obtain a Shenzhen VOA. Thanks.
