About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Travelling from LON to BKK via PVG

Travelling in Air China Business from London to Bangkok via Shanghai. I have an 18 hour layover on return leg - and i assume i would qualify for the 24/72 hour visa waiver?
What are the rules on luggage, if i am able to leave PVG airport to visit Shanghai city?
Regards

It appears my flight lands at 0725 on 11th March - with flight out at 0130 on 12th. I would need to be back to check in around 2230, so wouldnt need accommodation. Would it still be granted the visa waiver?

Actually, the rules with the luggage depend entirely upon the carriage policy of the airline. In reality, I can assume that since you are flying on a single (through) ticket provided by Air China, your luggage will be checked all the way from London to Bangkok and in the same way from Bangkok to London on your return leg. You will know this detail upon your check-in in London or by contacting the airline directly.

Also, you will declare at check-in in London that you will travel to Bangkok via Shanghai using 24 hour visa free transit. The same thing for your return leg from Bangkok to London.

In order to be allowed to exit the airport, you will apply for 24 hour free entry permit upon your landing in Shanghai. Having 18 hours of layover means that you will want to exit the airport, explore the city and also to have a good sleep in the proper accommodation. For this reason, you will book your accommodation before your arrival in Shanghai and will also present the authorities with the accommodation confirmation in hard copy. Your chances to be allowed to exit the airport are very good and with a accommodation booking confirmation, practically certain.

Indeed, having 18 hours of layover allows you to do decent exploration of Shanghai and to enjoy your time out of the sterile zone of the airport. It is OK to stay at the airport up to 4 or maybe 5 hours, waiting for a connecting flight, but everything more than that is a torture. To be practically certain that you will be granted your entry permit, just don't forget to book your accommodation in Shanghai in advance and to have a confirmation with you in hard copy.

Actually, your layover almost ideally allows you to explore the city for practically the whole day. It is also true that you really don't need any kind of accommodation. Never mind, regardless of the fact that your layover is not during the night hours, you will apply for 24 hour free entry permit upon your landing and I'm quite certain that it will be granted to you because of the length of the layover itself and also because you will tell them (to the authorities) that you really want to try the ride on maglev, to explore Shanghai and to have a nice meal in the city :)
