About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Two layovers in China

Hello! I will be traveling from LAX to Hanoi, with two layovers in China. Beijing & Guangzhou. Total time is less than 24 hours in China. I do have the appropriate Visa for Vietnam. Do I need to worry about anything traveling through China? Thank you, Casey

Thanks for the quick reply! We have seven hours total in China with two hours between the two flights. Do you think that’s enough time to get the TWOV and go from international to domestic? Thank you!

You don't have to worry at all. I just hope that you have correctly counted your entire time needed for your transit. It is, from your first scheduled landing, in your case in Beijing, until your last departure, in your case from Guangzhou. So, you have to include both of your layovers and a flight time between Beijing and Guangzhou.

So, if your entire transit time is less than 24 hours, you should print out your e-tickets and have them in hard copy. Also, you will apply for 24 hour free entry permit upon your landing in Beijing because you will transfer from an international to a domestic flight. One more detail, I hope that your layovers are long enough to allow you to make your transfers without stress.

Part one:

Seven hours is definitely less than 24 hours, so you are fine for 24 hour visa free transit in this regard. Anyway, this detail with just 2 hours of transfer between your flights in Beijing is really tight. It is doable, but there are several formalities you have to accomplish, so you will have to literally run through the airport. Please, keep these details in mind:

- Let's hope your flight from US will arrive in Beijing on time.
- Try to be among the first passengers to exit the plane. Please, announce your flight details to the cabin crew and tell them that you are afraid to lose your connecting flight. They could help you to be among the first passengers to exit the plane.
- Run straight to 24 hour TWOV counter and if there is a queue don't be ashamed to ask to be given a priority. This is not always easy, but you should keep asking and be persistent. Have your flight tickets in hard copy.
- After you have bee granted an entry permit, run to the immigration checks, collect your luggage and clear the customs. Ask everywhere for a priority. Just say that you will lose the flight.
- Hopefully, you can do the above mentioned within an hour and after that run to the check-in for your connecting flight to Guangzhou.
- After the check-in, you can relax a bit, but still try to accomplish the security to be at the gate on time.

Part two:

Beijing airport is huge, the second in the world by the number of passengers, so just be persistent and you will find your way to your connecting flight. By the way, you should also check whether your domestic flight departs from the same terminal where your international flight arrives. It will be much easier or not so time consuming if both of the flights are using the same terminal, but if different terminals are concerned, you will really have to run. Again, this is all doable, but it requires from you to be a little bit of a fighter :)
