About:How to Travel to China without a Visa

Hello! I'm a Bulgarian passport holder. I'm going to travel from USA to Thailand through Shanghai.

I have a short layover in Shanghai before boarding the plane to Bangkok. I was wondering if I need transit visa and if I can get one upon arrival at the airport.

You don't need any kind of visa because your itinerary is covered by 24 hour visa free transit. In case that you have separate tickets and you have to collect your luggage to perform new check-in, you will apply for 24 hour free entry permit upon your landing in Shanghai to be allowed to exit the sterile zone in order to perform a new check-in. In case that you travel on a single (through) ticket, you will almost certainly remain in the transit zone. In any case, you don't need any kind of visa.
