If Sanya is your initial entry port into china (for example via Hong Kong) then you can apply for the 30 day Visa on Arrival. This will allow you to enter mainland china from Sanya and depart from Shanghai back to home country.

CDKING, this would be a very good and the most convenient option, but unfortunately only in theory. In reality Chinese authorities are trying to downplay Hainan VOA in favor of Hainan 30 day visa free access. I would say that Hainan VOA is practically on the exit doors. Here on this forum, on Hainan 30 day visa free access, there is a post by 3 UK citizens, published today, who had their tickets to Hainan from Singapore. They were denied boarding because the Singaporean immigration authorities demanded the proof of Chinese authorities approval for their day visa free access. Simply speaking, they were not allowed to travel to Hainan and they intended to use exactly Hainan VOA.

Having the above mentioned in mind, I would suggest to Kathy to obtain a single entry Chinese tourist (L) visa in advance because there are more and more testimonies showing that Hainan VOA is more like a roulette and less like a reliable option of travel to Hainan.
