About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Do I qualify for the 144 hour visa-free transit in China?

Hi. I am a US citizen with a valid passport. I will be flying to Toyko for a cruise around Japan and South Korea. The cruise ends at the port in Shanghi on October 26 and docks at 6:00 AM. I will be flying back to the US on October 27 at 12:05 PM. Does this qualify for the 144-hour visa-free transit? Assuming so, do I just notify the cruise line that I qualify for this and then apply for the permit upon arrival to the port? Where do I obtain the Arrival/Departure card? Thank you.

Your itinerary is definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit.

You are right that you will inform your cruise line about this fact to be relieved from their potential pressure to obtain a Chinese visa, but your main place where you will notify for this eligibility will be your last port of call before your arrival in Shanghai. I assume that it will be one of Japanese ports. There you will tell them (to the immigration official) that you intend to travel from Japan to US through Shanghai using 144 hour visa free transit. They will shortly inspect your flight ticket from Shanghai to US and you will be allowed to leave the country toward Shanghai.

You will almost certainly get your arrival/departure ticket on the ship, but if this is not the case, you will get one at the cruise terminal in Shanghai. You will fill out this card and also another form (blue color) for 144 hour visa free transit purposes. You will get a sticker in your passport and you will be allowed to exit the terminal and to enjoy your time until your departure by plane to US.

Just one detail... Your flight is not allowed to have any additional stops within mainland China and in Japan or some other country where you will have your last port of call, immediately before Shanghai.
