About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Does my trip qualify for 72-hour visa free transit?

I am a Canadian national travelling to Seoul from London via Shanghai. On my inward journey, there is barely 2 hours between my flights although I will need to clear immigration and pick up my luggage as I am travelling to Shanghai on Virgin Atlantic and travelling on to Seoul on Asiana. However on my return from Seoul to London, I will have an overnight stop in Shanghai. Do I qualify for the visa please and what do I need to do? Thanks

Part one:

Both of your itineraries are eligible for visa free transit in Shanghai. The first one will be definitely eligible for 24 hour visa free transit and the second one for 24 or 144 hour visa free transit in relation to your entire transit time needed in Shanghai, from your scheduled arrival from Seoul until your scheduled departure from Shanghai. In any case, you are fine and you can travel visa free.

Anyway, your main problem will not be these visa subjects, but your very short connecting time in Shanghai. In theory, you can catch your flight, but in reality 2 hours are really so short time and beside the mentioned, you are flying on two separate tickets. This means that you will have to apply for a 24 hour free entry permit upon your landing in Shanghai. After that, you will really have to run to immigration, then to collect your luggage, then customs, then new check-in, then security, then immigration and then a run to your gate. Very, very risky.

I assume that you have already booked your tickets and I also assume that you are not in position to make a changes... Well, you will have to risk and hope that your flight from London is on time or even ahead of time and then, just ask, ask and ask for a favor to be allowed to skip some queues. Otherwise, you will not make it and very huge Shanghai airport is quite time consuming. The only good detail is the fact that both of your flights are using the terminal 2.

I hope, you will make it.

Part two:

Regarding your flight back with the overnight in Shanghai. The procedure you have passed during your first journey will be basically the same for the second one with the difference, you will have so much time. Well, after you land in Shanghai, you will apply for 24 hour free entry permit to be allowed to exit the airport and you will be definitely granted one because you have separate tickets. You will then exit the airport, enjoy your accommodation and return back to the airport for your onward flight to London.
