About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I’m flying from Hanoi-Hong Kong-Shanghai-Hong Kong-New York.

Will I have issues because of the double layover in Hong Kong? I plan on being in Shanghai for only a few hours and not leaving the airport. The reason for going through Hong Kong twice is because the ticket was booked for me and it had to be through mainland China. Thank you

You will need a visa for HKG-PVG-HKG as that is not transit, no matter how long you will be stopping in Shanghai and whether clearing immigration or not. If you show up at HKG without a visa then boarding will be refused.

Could you maybe rearrange your flights to and from Shanghai? Maybe to look like this:

Hong Kong - Shanghai - Macau

or

Macau - Shanghai - Hong Kong

Hong Kong and Macau are next to each other and perfectly connected by public transport, so this could be your option to enjoy 24/144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai.
