This question is my returning trip
I hold a U.S passport traveling from Bangkok Thailand---Transit in Pudong Shanghai 20 Hrs---back to Los Angeles U.S.A
Do I qualify for 24 Hrs visa free transit

The above just explains like U.S---Shanghai---Thailand OK
BUT REVERSE THAILAND---SHANGHAI---U.S.A WITH U.S. PASSPORT OK OR NOT

It is definitely OK. Your itinerary is perfectly eligible for 24 hour visa free transit in Shanghai. Having in mind quite a long layover, I would suggest you to book your accommodation for Shanghai in advance and to have a booking confirmation in hard copy at the moment of your arrival in Shanghai. There you will apply for 24 hour free entry permit to be allowed to leave the airport and to explore the city and to enjoy your accommodation. Anyway, you should be aware that the issuing of the mentioned permit is entirely upon immigration discretion. This is exactly the reason why I'm telling you to book your accommodation in advance because like this you will improve your chances to be granted a permit to almost certain level.
