Are we able to apply for the transit visa or will we still have to apply for the whole tourist visa?

Is it 24 hours or more than 24 hours? You cannot use 24 hours transit without visa at Shenzhen for transit to Hong Kong. Also you cannot use any kind of transit without visa for travel from Hong Kong to Shenzhen. You can consider the Shenzhen visa on arrival (it's not free), or flying from Hong Kong to Guangzhou and then going to Shenzhen, or just get tourist visas.

Actually, if you are flying on DZ6223, you will arrive in Shenzhen in the morning at 08:40. To be eligible to cross to Hong Kong visa free, you just need a ferry that will depart from 08:45 onward and this will make you eligible for 144 hour visa free transit. For example, you can take a ferry departing at 10:15. As you know, you have to book this ferry in advance and bring the printout of an e-confirmation with you in hard copy as a proof of your transit. You will also use this e-confirmation to collect your tickets at Shekou ferry terminal.

To return to Shenzhen to fly out back to Darwin, the best and easiest option is to apply for 5 day Shenzhen VOA.
