About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I plan to fly from New Zealand to London with a stop in Guanzhou with China Southern Airline

During my 144 hour free transit visa I would like to travel to Hong Kong by train and return to Guanzhou by train. Is this possible? or do I need a tourist visa?

You need a visa for that. Transit without visa at Guangzhou is only available if you arrive by air.
