About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

visa free travel possible on both legs (outward & return)?

I have the possibility of flights to Japan from Europe with Air China. The outward leg is via Beijing, the return is via shanghai. Is it possible to stop over on the way out and again on the way back?

Yes, it is perfectly possible. All you have to take care of is that your flights to and from your Chinese destinations don't have any additional landing within mainland China. In other words, your flights have to be of nonstop type.
