What is the cost of Visa-free Transit?

We will be traveling thru China on the way to US in December. We have about 10 hours of layover in Beijing and are hoping to take a quick tour of the Great Wall using the Visa-free transit. Wondering if there is a cost to getting this visa-free transit stamp.. We will be in Beijing for just 10 hours.

Trip will be from Bomaby->Beijing->Los Angeles
Thanks much

Thank you Zupan! As it turns out, I was able to add a day to my stay in Beijing. Which means the stop over is 34 hours instead of 10 hours now. Are you saying this type of stopover is permitted at the discretion of immigration? Can I count on it? I am planning to book trips and hotel to take advantage of the stopover. I am US passport holder. Would appreciate any thoughts. Thanks!

Here we have two different things:

1. You itinerary, if you have mentioned all your stops, is eligible for 24 hour visa free transit, so there is no need for any kind of visa. Also, there is no charge.

2. To be allowed to exit the airport, you have to apply for 24 hour free entry permit upon your landing in Beijing. As you can see, this is a separate detail and this detail does not belong to passenger's rights. So, you should keep in mind that this permit is issued at immigration discretion only. Of course, if you book a half day tour to visit the Great Wall, you will increase your chances to be allowed to exit the airport, but you should be also aware of the possibility of denied exit. There is no charge for an entry permit either.
