I’m travellling from uk to Beijing for 3 nights then going on cruise, do I need a visa?

Well, if you don't have landing in other Chinese cities except Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei, and your first port of call is in a third country, you will be eligible for the 144h visa-free transit in Beijing.
