Actually, you have two options. One option is a Chinese tourist (L) visa and another one is 24/144 hour visa free transit. In any case, this one day trip will be quite an expensive one. In the first option, the main drawback is the hassle of obtaining a Chinese tourist (L) visa for just one day trip.
Another option is 24/144 visa free transit option, that would be even more expensive. So, to be eligible for a visa free transit option you will have to:
- take a flight from Hong Kong to Guangzhou
- take a train from Guangzhou to Shenzhen
- take a ferry from Shenzhen to Macau
- take a bus or ferry from Macau to Hong Kong
There is, in reality, even a third option called 6 day visa exemption for tourists to Pearl River Delta, but this option has to be organized as a tourist group (tour) at Hong Kong and organized by a relevant agency in Hong Kong. This option would be probably the most convenient in your case, but if you want to enjoy it, you are supposed to find other participants from some other countries that will form a tourist group and also to find an itinerary that will be satisfactory for your needs.
